We acknowledge that we work and gather in the historical territory of the Atfalati nation, also known as the Tualatin Kalapuya people, whose ancestors have been expelled by the United States to the Grand Ronde reservation in January 1856, after the ratification of the Willamette Valley Treaty (also known as Treaty with Kalapuya, etc.) between the United States of America and Multnomah, Cathlamet, Clackamas, Kalapuya, Atfalati, and others, in the previous year. In 1954, Congress terminated the federal recognition of the Grand Ronde tribes, depriving them of the already diminished land territory, as well as their right to tribal sovereignty and self-determination. In 1983, Congress rectified this tragedy by enacting the Grand Ronde Restoration Act. Today, the Atfalati people form part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
Additionally, this region has been home to the Clackamas, Chinook, Multnomah, Molalla, Cowlitz, and other First Nations. In modern times, the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area has become one of the urban areas with a large Native American and Alaska Native population. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is one of the largest tribal communities in Oregon.
As we are both a local and global ministry, we also encourage everyone to learn about their indigenous history, cultures, and the history of colonization wherever applicable.
